YOUR 3-MONTH POOL OWNER GUIDE
As a pool owner or a first-time Pool owner, the first question you would ask is “Where do I start”. This is a back-to-basics guide to maintaining your pool this winter.
A backyard pool at first sounds like a wonderful idea however for some it could be a daunting task. We are here to supply you with our Pool Xpert advice on the top 4 key elements of your pool and what every pool owner should focus on. A swimming pool needs regular maintenance to prevent algae buildup.
Algae is a small plant-like organism that grows, yes, you guessed it, in your pool water.
Algae spores are continually brought into the pool through wind, rain, contaminated equipment, and even contaminated swimsuits. If conditions are right, these spores can spread rapidly and take over the pool in a short amount of time. Warm weather, sunlight, lack of circulation in the water, and nitrates or carbon dioxide in the water can all contribute to algae growth.
There are three types of algae:
-Green Pool Algae, these are the most common pool algae which floats in the pool or potentially turn your entire pool green.
–Yellow Pool Algae, This algae grows on the walls of pools in places that are not exposed to much sunlight. It is the second most common alga you will find in the pool.
–Black Algae, black spots in the pool walls is a tough algae to kill. Black algae have resistance to chlorine. Black algae are usually carried into the pool water by swimwear that has been in natural bodies of water, like a lake or ocean. Dogs can also carry black algae spores on the bottom of their feet.
Whatever colour the algae, it’s an unsightly nuisance, so get ahead of the problem and stop it from growing in the first place. Proper maintenance, routine cleaning, and appropriate chemicals all play a crucial role in preventing algae growth. Be sure to test your water regularly, and address any issues immediately.
The five elements of maintaining your pool are Circulation, Filtration, Cleaning, and Chemistry.
Circulation
Pool circulation refers to water movement around the pool to promote water flow and move the debris to the pool filter for a cleaner, healthier pool.https://poolresearch.com/water-circulation/.
Let your pump run for 6-8 hours which will allow the water to circulate properly.
Circulating your pool water allows the chemicals to spread evenly throughout the pool surface area.
Filtration
Your pool filter needs to run up to 12 hours daily in order for the water to pass through the filter. This reduces the growth of algae. There are three types of different filters in the market, Sand filter, Cartridge Filter and D.E Filter.
Sand Filters are common normal household filters that are used in most residential and commercial swimming pools. Sand filters are easy to maintain and clean which makes them convenient.
Cartridge Filters are single-element pool filter systems suitable for small to medium-sized residential pools. Cartridge filters are ideal for pools which are confined in small spaces.
D.E Filters make use of diatomaceous powders. D.E filters can remove particles of up to 5 microns, which makes them the most effective filters, however, they are the most difficult to maintain.
Cleaning
Ensure that you clean your pool at least once a week. Invest in a Quality Telescopic pole which inserts into a Quality Skimmer to remove any floating debris. Purchase a Quality brush from your nearest Pool Xpert in order for you to brush the walls, floors as well as any steps in your pool.
Purchase the right type of pool cleaner that is suitable for the size of your swimming pool. There are different types of pool cleaners, like a Suction, Mechanical or Robotic pool cleaners.
Chemistry
To have the perfect swimming pool water throughout the year, test your water regularly. There are 4 water levels to control such as PH Level, chlorine, Alkalinity and Stabiliser.
