COP, you may be surprised to learn, has nothing to do with policemen when it comes to swimming pool heat pumps.
Really. COP stands for ‘coefficient of performance’ and is used in heat transfer to describe the efficiency of any device transferring heat.
Let’s put in laymen’s terms. All heaters are compared to a standard form of heating called resistance heating. This form of heating, like that you’ll find in your toaster filament, is constant and has a COP of 1.
If the COP of your pool’s heat pump is 5, it means the heater is 5 times more efficient than resistant heating (your toaster), so your pump is energy efficient. And the savings go up even more. The higher the COP number, the less it will cost to operate.
