You should find scales in your bathroom or kitchen, not on the side walls of your pool. Not only is the white film around the water lines of your swimming pool unattractive, it may also mean your water chemistry is out of balance.

First, what is scale?  Scale is the crystalline build-up of inorganic materials (most often calcium) found in many different pool shells, from plaster and fiberglass to stone and ceramic tile.

Here’s how to fix and prevent the issue.

    • Test regularly to ensure that calcium hardness levels are between 200 to 400 parts per million.
    • Maintain proper pH (7.4 to 7.6 ppm is ideal) and alkalinity (80 to 100 ppm).
    • Dilute Calcium levels by draining a portion of the pool and refilling it with fresh water.
    • Use commercially available sequestering agents.
    • Ensure that brushing the pool walls is part of your routine maintenance program.
    • Applying a solution of Hydrochloric acid diluted with water. This option should always be followed by vigorous brushing of the walls.
